Commonly Asked Questions about therapy
Mental Health Therapy, also sometimes called counseling or psychotherapy, is a collaborative process between a trained professional and an individual, couple, family unit, or group. It aims to address emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues to improve overall well-being and quality of life. Therapy provides a safe space to explore though, feelings, and experiences, develop coping strategies, and gain insight into oneself.
Common issues treated in therapy often include mood disturbances which can range from apathy to depression, from anxiety to overcoming past traumas. When individuals enter therapy there are a range of concerns or presenting problems that we work to overcome. It can be an individual wanting to be more expressive and less shy, someone who wants to work on being able to make new friends and increasing ability to feel vulnerable. It may include working to stabilize moods and reduce impulsivity, increasing an ability to be mindful, overcoming grief or loss of some kind, perhaps wanting to cut back on use of drugs or alcohol. There is no “typical” therapy client, we work to understand you as an individual and provide unique, tailored solutions to address the concerns or issues present for you in your life.
Therapy offers a multitude of benefits. It can help you gain clarity and perspective, improve self esteem, enhance coping skills, develop healthier relationships, manage stress, and overcome emotional challenges. A therapist provides guidance, support, and tools specific to your unique needs, empowering you to navigate life’s difficulties and achieve personal growth.
Therapy can be beneficial for anyone seeking support, personal development, or resolution of specific issues. If you are experiencing emotional distress, struggling with relationships, facing major life transitions, or simply wanting to enhance your well-being, therapy can provide valuable insights and strategies. It’s worth considering therapy if you find your emotional challenges or substance use are interfering with your daily functioning and overall happiness.
The duration of therapy varies depending on individual circumstances and goals. Some individuals benefit from short-term therapy focused on specific issues, while others may engage in longer term therapy for deeper exploration and personal growth. At Estel Counseling, we believe the minimum amount of time to create a sustained mood or behavioral change is about 3 months of counseling, though our clients often remain engaged in therapy for much longer.
